The Kuyper College Men's Basketball team won a nail-biter on Tuesday night over Andrews University. The Cougars defeated the Cardinals by a score of 75-68 in the overtime win on Tuesday.Â
Kuyper went into the halftime break with a 34-30 lead. The lead remained in the single digits for the entire game, as both teams went back and forth for much of the night. Kuyper was up 3 with less than a minute left, when Andrews hit a huge three pointer to tie up the game. Kuyper was able to hold for the last shot, and
Jeremiah Jolliffi was fouled on an offensive rebound. He went to the free throw line and missed the front end of the one and one with about 4 seconds remaining. Kuyper fouled Andrews off of the miss, and Andrews was sent to the FT line with a chance to win the game. The Cardinals missed the front end of the one and one, and the game was sent to overtime.Â
The Cougars were able to pull away fairly early into the overtime period and close out the game. The Cougars won the overtime period by a score of 13-5 in order to secure the victory.Â
Kuyper was led by junior
Herman Brown, who had a massive night. Brown finished the game with 20 points (4/8 3FG), 15 rebounds, and 5 assists. This was Brown's second double-double of the season.
Danyel Bibbs was huge down the stretch for the Cougars, as he had a couple criitical finishes and a made three pointer to close out the game. Bibbs finished the evening with 17 points and 6 assists.
Jeremiah Jolliffi and
Daniel Milton each had 8 rebounds on the night.Â
Kuyper did not have their most efficient night shooting the basketball, as they shot 37.3% from the field, but their offensive rebounding and ability to force Andrews into turnovers proved to be enough to get a win. Kuyper had 22 offensive rebounds as a team.Â
When asked about the game, Coach Gary Bailey said, "We won a game tonight that we probably didn't deserve to win. Our kids always play hard, but we didn't do a good job of managing the game. We will continue to work on improving our number of turnovers. We won't win many games with 24 turnovers. I am proud of my team that they kept digging tonight and won a close game. We will work tomorrow to get better."Â
The win over Andrews moves Kuyper to 2-1 on the season (1-0 NCCAA II). They return to action again at home on Friday night vs. the University of Campbellsville Harrodsburg. U of C Harrodsburg won the 2021 NCCAA II National Championship, and has been a contender the last couple of seasons, so Friday will prove to be a great test for the Cougars.Â
Kuyper and University of Campbellsville Harrodsburg will tip off at 5:00pm.Â
