The Kuyper College Women's Basketball team fell just short on Wednesday night in their game against the Crusaders from Great Lakes Christian College. The Cougars lost to the Crusaders 68-71. This game included two NCCAA II Midwest Regional teams.
#10 ranked Kuyper came in tonight on a school-record five game win streak. However, they were unable to extend the streak to six games, as the clutch shotmaking down the stretch for the Crusaders proved to be the difference. Kuyper went into the half-time break down 2 points. The Cougars had the lead with less than 5 minutes to go, but Great Lakes Christian hit a couple clutch threes to regain the lead and the momentum. Three point shooting proved to be one of the biggest discrepancies in the game, as the Crusaders shot 10/27 from three (37%), as the Cougars only shot 1/8 from three (12.5%).Â
Kuyper was led by
Shonyah Hawkins, who finished with an impressive double-double of 28 points, 11 steals, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Hawkins' 11 steals tied a Kuyper Women's Basketball school record. The record is now shared with Emily Wittenbach, who played at Kuyper from 2007-2011.
Aniya Fisher also had an impressive double-double, as Fisher finished with 14 points and 16 rebounds. She shot an efficient 6-10 from the field.
Jakya Rimpson added 13 points and 7 rebounds.
Abigail Rivera-Sosa gave the Cougars a nice momentum and scoring spark off the bench in the second half.Â
With the loss, the #10 ranked Cougars move to 9-6 on the season and 7-2 in the NCCAA II. Kuyper returns to action on Thursday, where they will travel to Berrien Springs to take on Andrews University at 5:30pm ET.Â
