The Kuyper College Women's Basketball team opened their season on Friday afternoon with a road game at Ave Maria University in Florida. The Cougars lost to Ave Maria by a score of 84-52.Â
Ave Maria got out to a lead early in the first half, and they carried that momentum throughout the course of the game. Ave Maria rode some hot shooting early to a 12 point first quarter lead. However, the second quarter is where they really took control of the game, as they outscored Kuyper 30-6 in the second quarter. Kuyper came out of the halftime break and played a much better brand of basketball. They took care of the ball better and executed better on offense. They were able to outscore Ave Maria in the second half, but the huge first half lead was too much to overcome for the Cougars.Â
Aniya Fisher led the way for Kuyper with a double-double to begin the year. She finished the day with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Couper Agema added 11 points to the Cougars' effort, with all 11 of her points coming in the second half. Junior guard
Maria Sobany added 8 points and 6 rebounds on the day.
Abigail Rivera-Sosa scored 8 points for Kuyper.Â
The Cougars move to 0-1 on the year with the loss, but they are right back to game action tomorrow, as they will take on New College of Florida on Saturday at 1:00pm. The game will also be played at Ave Maria University.Â
