Kuyper College brought back athletics to the institution this year, after only having it from 2007-2015. Developmental Basketball was one of the programs that were added this year. Kuyper began the year with three Developmental/JV teams, but the program merged to two teams for most of the season. The two teams were labeled by school colors: Developmental - Purple and Developmental - Black. Though Kuyper College had a Men's Basketball program from 2007-2015, they never had a Developmental/JV program, so this was the inaugural season for the Developmental Basketball program.Â
Kuyper Developmental - Purple finished the season 7-16 on the year. The Cougars played a tough schedule, as they played many NAIA and NCAA Division III programs that have been around for multiple years. However, Developmental - Purple continued to compete and push forward all year, and the program saw lots of growth and development by the end of the year.Â
Developmental - Purple opened the year with a nice home win over Bethel University JV. After that, the Cougars went on a three-game losing skid. However, they countered the losing streak with a three-game winning streak, highlighted by a home win over the University of Olivet JV. However, the second semester schedule proved to be challenging for the Cougars, as they dropped nine games in a row. The Cougars had some great battles during that losing streak, but the difficulty of the schedule was evident. That being said, the strength of schedule was a great way for Coach
Tyler Whitcomb and his program to learn and grow throughout the course of the year.Â
Come tournament time, the Cougars lost in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Cougar Classic JV Tournament to the Cornerstone University JV team. In the consolation round, the Cougars were able to avenge two previous losses to Great Lakes Christian JV and end the year with a quality win. Despite the ups and downs on the scoreboard, Kuyper Developmental - Purple had a very successful season in terms of development and individual player growth.Â
Developmental - Purple was led by a 1-2 scoring punch from guards
Rylee Carter and
Terrance Murphy.
Rylee Carter averaged 17.4 points per game on 44% from the field. Carter also shot 38% from three.
Terrance Murphy was the second-leading scorer for the Cougars, as he averaged 12 points per game, 4.2 rebounds per game, and 3.8 assists per game.Â
Corey Pritchett was another key piece to the Cougars this season, as he did a bit of everything. Corey would typically guard the other team's best scorer, while also averaging 10 points per game. Additionally, Corey led the Developmental program with 48 steals on the year.Â
The Cougars also got significant contributions from
JT Foster,
Grady Schippers,
Kaleb Gardner,
Damon Jackson,
Jakob Rodriguez and
Hernandez Daylo this season. Foster routinely flirted with double-doubles on the year, as he was a nice scoring option and a force on the glass for the Cougars.
Grady Schippers provided great spacing to the team offensively with his prolific shooting, as he rained in 26 threes on the year, which was good for second on the team.Â
Coach
Tyler Whitcomb is very excited about the future of his program. Coach Whitcomb said, "I love how we ended the season and how our players developed throughout the year. We came a long way and should see major improvement going into next season." Coach Whitcomb added, "I feel that what we are doing at Kuyper in having two JV teams is going to become a trend. In my opinion, this leads to true player development. We will keep adding pieces, and we will continue to move forward to add to what we already have. We believe our program is in a great spot."Â
Kuyper Developmental - Purple ends the season with a 7-16 record, but the program is excited for an off-season of even further developmental and growth in order to prepare for the 2024-2025 season.Â
