The Kuyper College Men's Basketball team defeated Andrews University on Wednesday evening by a score of 72-67. The Cougars had to earn this win in comeback fashion, as Andrews led a majority of the game. However, a late run and some big shots from the Cougars led to the Kuyper victory.Â
Andrews got out to an early lead in this one, behind some prolific three-point shooting. Kuyper fought back and forth, keeping the game within reach. Andrews led 39-34 at halftime. Andrews reached a 16 point lead at one point in the first half.Â
In the second half, Kuyper quickly cut the lead, but Andrews responded with a run of their own. The Cardinals led by 4-10 points for much of the second half, and were even leading by 10 with just a few minutes remaining.
Nick Moore and
Nic Yorke each went on individual scoring runs late in the game to get the Cougars the lead.
Nick Moore scored two layups in the last two minutes to tie the game. Then with about twenty seconds remaining, tied at 70,
Jashaun Boggerty found
Nick Moore in the corner, and Moore converted to give the Cougars the lead. The Cougars needed to get one more defensive stop, and they did.
Austin Stone secured the big rebound and iced the game at the free throw line.Â
The Cougars did not play their prettiest game of the year, but they found a way to defend their home court and get the win. Both teams played a clean game, each turning the ball over just 9 times. It was a clash of styles in this one, as Andrews was much better from the perimeter, as they made 11 threes on 36.7% efficiency, while Kuyper made just 4 threes on 19.0% efficiency. However, Kuyper dominated the boards, grabbing 22 offensive rebounds and winning the rebounding battle 55-32.Â
The forwards were much of the reason Kuyper won the rebounding battle the way they did.
Jacob May and
Austin Stone each grabbed double-digit rebounds.
Nic Yorke was one rebound short of joining them.Â
Austin Stone led the Cougars with 16 points and 12 rebounds, including the free throws to make the game a two-possession game at the end.
Jacob May logged 14 points and a team-high 14 rebounds.
Nick Moore scored 13 points, including 7 points in the final two minutes. His go-ahead three was to make the game 73-70 with 19 seconds remaining was clutch for Kuyper.
Nic Yorke added 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists.Â
Jashaun Boggerty scored 10 for the Cougars.Â
