The Kuyper College Men's Basketball team survived a 2OT thriller in Berrien Springs, Michigan on Thursday evening. The Cougars defeated Andrews University 97-88 in the rematch. The Cougars defeated the Cardinals 63-47 back in late November.Â
This game was closer than the first meeting between these two teams, as it was a back-and-forth game with countless lead changes. Kuyper went into the halftime break up 37-33. However, Andrews took a lead late in the second half, and it looked like the game was slipping away from Kuyper. However, the Cougars were able to force overtime. In the first overtime, it looked like the game was slipping away once again from the Cougars, but a huge three from
Herman Brown with 6 seconds left tied the game. Kuyper was able to force a contested fadeaway three from the Cardinals, leading to a second overtime. Kuyper ran away with the game in the second overtime, leading to a Kuyper win.Â
Despite the 97 points, Kuyper was not very efficient on the offensive end of the floor. The Cougars shot just 34.4% from the field and 23.1% from three. However, hte Cougars shot an astounding 26/28 from the free throw line for a team percentage of 92.9%. On the other side, Andrews shot just 15/24 from the free throw line (62.5%).Â
The Cougars got a historic game from senior
Herman Brown.
Herman Brown finished the night with 38 points, 14 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Brown made 7 threes, which is a new school record.
Herman Brown has already scattered his name throughout the Kuyper record books for his shooting prowess, as last season he made the most threes in a season in program history. Additionally, Brown's 38 points was enough to etch him in the record books with the 3rd highest scoring total in program history. Derrick Brooks has the school record with 43 points in a game.Â
In addition to Brown's historic performance,
Sam Dillard added 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists for the Cougars.
Damion Cochran finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds.
Austin Stone logged a huge double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds.
Kuyper's record improves to 9-12 on the year with the win.
