Kuyper College Men's Basketball dropped their rematch with rival Grace Christian University on Friday evening by a score of 74-70. The Cougars lost to the Tigers back in November at Kuyper. The loss moves Kuyper to 2-3 on the season in Midwest Regional games.Â
Friday's game was an entertaining, back-and-forth game, where both teams responded to their opponents' runs with runs of their own. Kuyper was down 33-27 at the halftime break. In the second half, the lead changed countless times. The Cougars had a 5 point lead with about 8 mins to go, but Grace Christian responded immediately with a three and an and-one to regain the lead. Grace Christian took control with a couple minutes to go in the game, and they never looked back.Â
Neither Grace Christian or Kuyper were prolific on offense in this game. The Cougars shot 25-63 (39.7%) from the field and 14-21 (66.7%) from the free throw line. The Tigers shot an even lower percentage from the field, as they shot just 27-79 (34.2%) from the field and 9-37 (24.3%) from three. However, the biggest difference in this one came down to offensive rebounding. The Tigers dominated the Cougars on the glass, resulting in 21 offensive rebounds and second chance opportunities for the Tigers.Â
For Kuyper,
Sam Dillard led the team in scoring with 17 points.
Damion Cochran added 13 points.
Herman Brown finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds.
Richard Major added 12 points and 8 rebounds.
Nic Yorke gave the Cougars 7 points as well.
Austin Stone gave the Cougars 3 offensive rebounds, but the Cougars did not always capitalize on those second chance opportunities.Â
Kuyper's record drops to 8-12 on the season with the loss and 4-4 in the NCCAA II. The Cougars will return to action on Thursday, February 6th, where they will head to Berrien Springs, MI to take on Andrews University. The game will tip off at 8:00pm. The Cougars won the last matchup over the Cardinals by a score of 63-47 back in late November.Â
