The Kuyper College Men's Basketball team hosted Maranatha Baptist Univeristy on Saturday afternoon for a NCCAA Midwest Regional match-up. This was the first of two meetings between the Cougars and the Sabercats this season. Kuyper came into the game ranked #8 in the most recent NCCAA II Coaches Poll. However, the Cougars suffered a home loss to the Sabercats on Saturday by a score of 72-70.
The game was competitive throughout, with Maranatha holding the lead for the majority of the game. The game was a clash in styles, as Maranatha shot 32 threes, while Kuyper shot just 16 threes. This led to a big three point discrepancy in the contest, as the Sabercats made 11 threes on 34.4%, while the Cougars made just 3 threes on an ice-cold 18.8%. Kuyper won the rebounding battle 49-32, but the three point discrepancy was too much for Kuyper to overcome.Â
The Sabercats led 41-31 at the half. Kuyper stormed back in the second half, tying the game late, but were unable to execute well enough down the stretch to win the game.Â
Nick Moore led the Cougars with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Latrell Jennings added 14 points and 8 rebounds.
Nic Yorke also scored double-figures, as he finished the game with 11 points and 5 assists.
Arlind Avdo and
Jacob May each scored 8 points for Kuyper.Â
The Cougars' record dropped to 8-10 on the year with the loss and 6-4 in the NCCAA II.Â
