Before getting into coaching, Wilkinson was an impressive athlete. He played basketball and ran track and field at the University of Findlay. He then went on to run Track and Field at the University of Michigan. In track and field, Wilkinson qualified for the 1992 Olympic team trials for the 100m hurdles. In 1994, he went to Milan, Italy, where he played four seasons of professional basketball overseas.
After his playing career, Wilkinson joined the coaching ranks. Wilkinson has an extensive coaching resume, as he has coached at the high school level, as well as the semi-professional level. At the high-school level, Wilkinson has coached Catholic Central High School, Union High School, and Lee High School throughout the years. In 2013, Wilkinson began coaching at the semi-professional level. He began as an Assistant coach for the Battle Creek Flight, where he led scouting and player development efforts for the organization. He helped lead the Flight to the IBA playoffs that season. In 2014, he became the Co-Owner and Head Coach of the Grand Rapids Fusion, another semi-professional basketball organization. Under his leadership, the Fusion have won an IBA Championship. They have also had 11 IBA All-Stars, an IBA League MVP, an IBA Rookie of the Year, and an IBA 6th Man of the Year.
With his ties and connections, Wilkinson has helped players reach professional basketball leagues overseas, similar to what he did in his own playing career. He is also the Co-Founder of the Grand Rapids Sparks AAU basketball program. Wilkinson has a passion for the game of basketball and helping players develop and improve in order to reach their highest potential. He wants to see players maximize their opportunities in their playing career.
